Folks, this is Kirsten Gillibrand's answer to a Christian pastor who had questioned her on same sex marriage.
7/7/10 Dear Reverend; Thank you for taking the time to contact me about the issue of same sex marriage. While I understand and respect your deeply held views on this issue, I believe one of the basic principles our great Nation is respect for personal freedom. I do not believe the Government should be able to deny benefits of marriage to two committed adults of the same sex. Therefore, I would support the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) should it come before the United States Senate. I believe that federal law should protect the rights of committed same sex couples across America to insure these families have the same rights to hospital visitation, employee benefits for families and be eligible for other entitled rights and benefits of committed partners. Being part of a family is a basic right and I believe the federal Government should support the basic principle of fairness. There is some concern that repealing DOMA would force religious groups to perform a marriage that they do not support. Religious freedom is a critical aspect of American history and I believe it should not be infringed upon. Repealing DOMA does not harm religious freedom, it only enhances the scope of the law to allow for equal treatment to same sex couples in committed relationships. We are a stronger nation when we allow all our citizens to enter into a committed relationship to share their lives together. Thank you again for taking the time to share your views on this issue with me. Sincerely yours Kirsten Gillibrand United States Senator There's more on this, folks. Ms. Gillibrand, before she inherited sweet hillery's seat in the Senate, she claimed to believe in no more gun control! Shortly after she became a Senator she betrayed her constituency on this issue and joined the rest of the anti gun lobby. In addition to that, she became one of 7 Senators who voted against de-funding ACORN, part of Obama's thugmob! Only 7 out of one hundred Senators. bad record! |
